Get paid for a skill you’ve had since you were 2 years old! Well, at least if you’re a native English speaker :P…you can teach your way up to $25/hour teaching English to adults and kids from their laptops or mobile devices. (Although some lower paid opportunities start at $10/hour). Some companies like DaDaABC require a Bachelor degree and have a minimum number of hours required, while other companies like Cambly have fewer educational requirements and let you log in (and cash in!) whenever you have time.

Palfish is an English teaching app for IOS/Android that doesn’t necessarily require a Bachelor’s degree and allows you to work whenever you want. You can sign up as a regular teacher to help students practice conversational skillz, or as a Kids Course teacher. As a regular teacher you set your own per minute rate, bringing in around $10-$15 per hour. Kids Course teachers pull in a steady $16/hour, but the position offers less flexibility (classes are booked in advance and you can’t miss more than 6 classes in 6 months). Also, it might be a bit tougher to snag without a Bachelor’s degree.

In a review of the company, a Palfish teacher said:

“Working as a teacher on Palfish has been pretty great so far! There are aspects of it that I don’t quite like (namely the lower rates of earning and the severity of penalties for cancellations or no-shows with the official kids course) but it has been a steady income stream for me over the past year.”

PRO TIP: If you want to teach English online with Palfish (and possibly other Chinese companies on this list like Qkids), you will have to have either an English degree or TESOL certification. A Palfish teacher said (in December 2018):

I work with Palfish, you might want to mention that English teachers will now be required to have an English degree or TESOL. China just had a huge crackdown. Palfish said they have stopped accepting applications that do not have this requirement.”

The teacher wrote further:

“It’s now a governmental requirement. We need to get it by the end of the year if we want to keep teaching.”

If you don’t have an English degree and you’re not TESOL certified, you should do that before you apply to Chinese ESL teaching companies.

LearnLight hires native and non-native language teachers to teach a variety of languages. They’re looking for people who have two years of teaching experience and have mastered the language they teach. They’d also like teachers to have a teaching certification in that language (such as a TEFL). Teachers have to commit to a fixed teaching schedule of ten hours per week for at least one year in order to work for LearnLight. Information about how much they pay is hard to track down, but I imagine your salary would be in line with the other language teaching companies here.

In a review of the company, a teacher said:

“Working from home, flexible hours, great support staff, great platform and Coordination tries to meet your needs and fill up your schedule. This is a wonderful environment and I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else.”

WTW: The company doesn’t list any location requirements.

LiveLingua is an online language school. They’re currently looking for Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish tutors. To be an English tutor, for example, you must:

    • be a native English speaker
    • have at least 2 years of teaching experience
    • have a university degree in teaching English as a second language or a bachelor’s in education and a certification in teaching English as a second language (like a TEFL)

Phew, those are some hefty requirements! This job requires a lot of experience, but it also has a lot of perks. LiveLingua’s class coordinators will try to match you with students who they think you’ll mesh well with. This student pairing service also ensures that you’ll get paid bookings right away. Not every company on this list guarantees that you’ll have classes, so that’s a definite plus. There’s also a full-time support staff to help you with lesson-planning, technical issues, and problems with your students. There’s also a writer on staff who will tweak your profile for you to help you stand out and attract students.

LiveLingua doesn’t provide salary information on their website, but after a little online sleuthing I found two teachers who make a little under $1000 a month for part-time hours.

In a review of LiveLingua, a Spanish teacher said:

“One of the best online companies I have ever worked for. They give us support with the students and are there if we have any questions.”
